Software Aids Pipeline Monitoring
CSE Servelec has won an important contract to monitor and control
a gas pipeline in the United Arab Emirates. Amid heightened tension
in the Middle East and growing concern about the security of oil
and gas supplies, UK based CSE Servelec has won an important contract
to monitor and control a gas pipeline in the United Arab Emirates.
Constructed by the Dodsal Group, a multinational conglomerate based
in India, the 210km pipeline is to carry gas supplied by Dolphin
Energy, from Al Ain to the water desalination plant in Fujairah.
The CSE Servelec solution will ensure 100% availability of the
pipeline, even under failure conditions, to guarantee that the gas
supply to Fujairah is never interrupted. This will be achieved through
a centralised control room at Al Ain, using CSE Servelec's Scope
X-Tel software.
All elements of the system will be duplicated to enable duty/standby
operation and a leak detection system and emergency shutdown procedure
will provide protection in the event of any damage to the pipeline,
giving total peace of mind. A fibre-optic-based telecommunications
network will communicate with eight remote telemetry units (RTUs)
at various locations along the pipeline.
Data regarding flow, temperature and pressure will be collected,
in addition to information for assistance with monitoring for fire,
battery management, cathodic protection and intruder alarms. Many
years of experience in providing Scada and telemetry solutions for
oil and gas pipelines in the region have prompted the need for a
local office from which these projects can be directed and supported
more easily. The nearby Jebel Ali Free Zone was earmarked by CSE
Servelec as the ideal location for this office, which opened at
the beginning of February.
John King, CSE Servelec's Middle East Sales Manager, will be joined
by Ian Blount, a Senior Engineer with 14 years experience of working
for CSE Servelec. Blount will be responsible for technical sales
and client support, and Sophia Fernandes, a recently appointed employee,
will provide administrative assistance and a friendly face for visitors
to the office.
Such a combination of experience and fresh blood is sure to make
this and other projects in the future a roaring success.
